Do I qualify?
To qualify for bankruptcy you need to fall within set criteria.
Bankruptcy is a serious matter, it is a way of dealing with debts you cannot afford to pay but it is only designed for those with very serious and overwhelming debt problems. Anyone who is struggling to pay their debts can go bankrupt, though you must:
− have a limited disposable income
− not be able to repay your debts in a reasonable timeframe
− be a resident of the UK to petition for your own bankruptcy
− be able to afford the fee of £475
− be prepared to give up all possessions of value that you own and the interest in your home
− be prepared to accept that it can affect your employment, certain professions including the police force, armed forces, local council and government offices can refuse to employ someone who is currently bankrupt or who has been declared bankrupt at some point in the past
− prepared to accept your bankruptcy will be advertised in newspapers
− prepared to accept your credit rating will be affected for six years
